NEW! Foodie Tuesdays

At the risk of over-posting, I was inspired to start another couple sets of weekly installments.  You can tell me if it's working or not, and I can see how long I can keep it up.  These will, of course, correspond with some of my favorite topics.

I thought it'd be nice to dedicate one day of the week to sharing some kind of slightly oddball food item, one that you might not have heard of or might not have thought of in a while.  This week: frozen custard.

According to our dear reference Wikipedia, it is "a cold dessert similar to ice cream, made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It typically contains 10% butterfat and 1.4% egg yolk."  It's a delicacy apparently widespread in the Midwest and East Coast, and all but non-existent anywhere west/south of the Rockies.  A coworker friend of mine just encountered it during her weekend trip to Chicago, and came back raving about it.  I have never had it, but I'd love to try.  How can you ever go wrong with eggs and milk?

Steph,

I like frozen custard too. We've had it a lot in the midwest and even in Philly...

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/405373 <--- for Bay Area spots... I heard about one in Willow Glen, but never tracked it down.

Thanks Jason!  I dug through the whole thread and it doesn't sound like anyone has found a decent/reliable bay area source for frozen custard.  Guess I'll have to wait for my next trip to Chicago =)

best place ever for this is in St. Louis, at a place called Ted Drews... check it out. i went there once and got a shirt- lost it- now literally 7 years later, my friend from stl is visiting and brought me a new shirt. if your ever there- go there!
Great idea! Keep going :)

Wikipedia says that frozen custard is actually used to make semifreddo. If so, it's decently available here in Italy (I'd say in about one third of ice-cream shops).

I love its consistency, it's very smooth and creamy - and as such, very easy to finish in a few seconds - . That's why I usually stay away from it - to prevent myself from getting a gallon and eating it in the next 10 minutes ;)

Salivatingly excellent image!& of course a very cool Idea!
if you find yourself in NYC Shake Shack has a vanilla and chocolate frozen custard and a special "flavor of the day"
